Are there ways to promote brain health other than taking a vitamin? Food has some of the most powerful abilities to help you avoid Alzheimer’s. This is my top eight nutrients for brain health.Brain Health, nutritients

There are a lot of different kinds of illness that can affect the brain. As we age however this population is unique because there are so many of us and never before has there been so much mental decline. Alzheimer’s is but one cognitive disease.

How To Avoid Alzheimer’s

Check out my favorites and incorporate them into your diet. Remember organic and non-GMO is always best, locally growth is great, and fresh is good. Avoid packaged food and frozen foods.

1. Sprouted grains are great. They provide energy for brains, but we don’t want to eat too much. Some great ideas are sprouted out quinoa or brown rice. I recommend staying away from pasta, or regular rice is both are starchy foods. The brain does not like starchy foods.

2. Make sure you’re getting your Omega’s. Omega-3’s have a crucial role in brain functioning and Alzheimer’s . To get enough from food sources like salmon, trout, herring, or sardines you’d have to eat a lot of fish. I recommend a hearty supplement that contains omega-3’s, 6, 7, and 9.

The Power Of Nutrition

Alzheimer’s, Omega 3

3. One of the most important nutrients in the top 8 nutrients for brain health is vitamin E.  According to the American Journal of Epidemiology, vitamin D plays a role in delaying cognitive decline. He is plentiful and most nuts, leafy green vegetables, asparagus, olives, seeds, and eggs.

4. Blueberries and other berries support a healthy brain. They are especially rich in a protective compound called anthocyanins according to Tufts University. Blueberries and blackberries have been found to be effective in improving memory and delaying short-term memory loss.

According to Tufts University, July 2015 issue of Ask Tufts Experts, Do blackberries have similar brain benefits from polyphenols as seen in blueberries? The answer is yes. Health find goes on to say that blueberries are also packed with vitamin C K and manganese. The Atlantic goes on to say that blackberries and other berries provide great protection against Alzheimer’s as well as other age-related memory loss and types of cognitive decline.

5. Vitamin K or potassium hit the list of top 8 nutrients for brain health and Alzheimer’s. Vitamin K is a powerful brain power booster and enhancer of cognitive function. To get more eat broccoli and berries. Rich in compounds called glucosinolates vitamin K helps neurotransmitter processes which keep the brain and memory sharp. Neurotransmitters continue to grow and form our entire lives. They actually form in neural networks according to our beliefs and thought patterns. When we talk about changing our lives and changing how we believe we have to lay down new neurotransmitter pathways. To do this, we have to have a healthy brain, to begin with.

How Important Is Sleep?

6. To me this should be at the start of the top 8 nutrients for brain health list, it’s a good night sleep. Our body needs 7 to 8 hours, and so does our mind. When we sleep, it should be relaxing yet dream filled. If your dreams are troubled, you toss and turn a good night sleep may not be happening for you. Taking time to discover if this is stress related, pain related, or function of our brain is important.sleep, insomina, acupuncture, naturopath

7. Vitamin C is a nutrient that seems to be good for everything. It is also good for the brain and protects against degeneration, and there’s a long history of its use. We know citrus fruits have vitiamin C, did you know it’s also in red peppers and broccoli as well.

8. Something hitting the news and it’s not a trend, is Turmeric. Turmeric is wonderful for many things including being a powerful anti-inflammatory. Many people are rushing to the store to buy Turmeric, and it may not even be the quality you need. It should be a unique blend that usually is found only from a prescription level at your naturopath or acupuncturist office.

Top 8 Nutrients For Brain Health

So how do you get all these great nutrients into your diet daily? My favorite way is a fruit smoothie. Now I don’t put protein powders or honey in mine. I find the fruit has enough sweetness but you can add a few drops of your favorite Stevia if you like. Stevia comes in flavors, and you can use the liquid form which isn’t processed.

Brain Health Daily

By mixing the berries together with some Kiefer or yogurt, you have a simple smoothie. Throw in some broccoli with your lunch or dinner. Make sure you go to bed and get the rest needed. Start your day with meditation or journal for a few minutes. This is a calm, relaxing state. Center your mind around positive things you see coming your way this day. Even on our worst days, our cloudy days we can begin with a fresh outlook. This is your day for a healthy body and a healthy mind. This is my list of the top 8 nutrients for brain health and to  help you avoid Alzheimer’s.

Different Types Of MagnesiumSupplements are confusing. Which one do you need and how much now to add to the confusion you have to think about which ‘form’ is right for you. I hope to take a boring topic and make it useful and fun. Did you know there are Nine different types of Magnesium and they’re not all great for you but you need this supplement!

You might say I eat nuts and beans so I don’t need to take a pill. Maybe you eat brown rice, salads, or whole wheat bread too but are you absorbing this co-factor that regulates so many things! Okay so you’re thinking like what Deb?

Why We Need Magnesium

“Magnesium is a co-factor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation.  Taking one of the different types of magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis.[1]

I guess it’s pretty important. I take it and knowing which kind was best for me took some time so I hope this article helps you. If you’re still lost then come see me as a patient or become a health coaching client by Skype or phone. Both are affordable!

different types of magnesium

Consiptation

The Quick And Dirty List Of Nine Different Types Of Magnesium

  1. Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate – the mineral form combined with an amino acid. It’s not your best bet.
  2. Magnesium Oxide – This is not your right one either. You’ve likely seen this on the shelf it’s magnesia.
  3. Magnesium Citrate – now we’re getting somewhere. This is the salt of citric acid and it works great for constipation and to prevent kidney stones. Still there may be better ones out there for you.
  4. Magnesium Orotate this is the best because our bodies can absorb it. All plants and animals use this to create RNA and DNA so it’s important for us humans. It provides us with energy and all the others things we want from this cofactor. It’s hard to find a good quality but I do have it available for my patient.
  5. Magnesium Lactate is great for digestive issues but should be avoided if you have kidney disease or kidney related problems. It’s the mineral by the way.
  6. Magnesium Glycinate, Malate & Taurates another three types are the most available. They each act differently and you should check with your alternative practitioner to know which is right for you.

MagnSpinachesium And Calcium Working Together

There’s a ton of research for decades now recommending that we take calcium and magnesium together. More recently the ratio has changed. Because we do get some calcium from our diet and rarely get magnesium it’s important that you use a 1 to 1 ratio. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a supplement made properly.

For a top-notch blend, I recommend a super blend of various types of this vitamin that is inexpensive for the best absorption. My other favorite source of this co-factor contains organic spinach and also available through our office for patients and virtual clients. To learn how to become a office patient or virtual client, contact our office. Both these are by professional-medical recommendation and we are happy to assist you with enrolling as a virtual client.

You know I’ve done acupuncture now for over twenty years now, and few people come in saying, “Hey can acupuncture help my high blood pressure?”High blood pressure

Hypertension Meets Acupuncture

It’s more the other problems you think about when you step into acupuncture. You try it for things like knee pain or a migraine, right?  So have you ever thought about the fact it might work for other things? Guess what pain can raise your blood pressure.

While research is super important, I want my blog to be fun and light. Health can get so serious and complicated. I think it’s smart to love your body and care for your health.

You probably want a little science and a recent study which appears in the presents the first evidence of the molecular activity behind electroacupuncture’s hypertension-lowering benefits. Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine[1] in California did the study.

Their research is pretty impressive too! When they treated patients with certain acupuncture wrist points their patients’ blood pressure decreased.  It’s more exciting when the patients had repeated treatments weekly their hypertension lowered long term. The client was able to reduce their western medicine with their doctor’s approval.

What Do I Think About Using Electroacupuncture To Treat Hypertension?

hypertensionAll I know is that when you reduce pain or stress, blood pressure goes down too. It’s good news for you.

Our bodies are amazing, and it does this thing called inflammation when we’re in pain. The purpose of inflammation is to eliminate cell injury and allow your body to repair itself.

Inflammation can cause migraines, and it can raise the pressure in our veins. The simple act of reducing pain helps the physical stress of discomfort.

Blood Pressure and Your Body’s Chemistry

So what did the study tell you in real people language? If you try acupuncture for high blood pressure is can reduce blood pressure for about two days. The electroacupuncture boosts these genes in your body called enkephalins. It’s really cool because these peptides are one of three major opioids produced by the body. What the heck are peptides you’re asking? In super simple terms, they’re a compound of amino acids, and your brain needs these things to be healthy.

Your body creates Opioid Peptides[2], and the opioid system controls pain, reward and addictive behaviors. Electroacupuncture lowers your blood pressure stimulates your body to make more enkephalins one of these Opioid Peptides! Kind of neat huh.

There’s more to chemistry, though. How tired are you?  Do you sleep and dream at night?  What kind of stress are you experiencing?Electroacupuncture

All these things can affect or indicate a vitamin deficiency. Just being borderline in vitamin D[3] can increase your risk. Again more studies for you in case you love research suggest you need to have higher vitamin D than once thought if you’re hoping to protect your heart and brain.

Wondering what to do when it comes to hypertension?  I was too. Mine was a combination of a D deficiency, stress, and pain. Who knew! Yes, healers have health problems too.

I couldn’t fix it by eliminating my pain. That helped but didn’t get me in the range of healthy heart. I take my health very seriously. High blood pressure is a sign of something, and I like to investigate do you?

Meditation And ElectroAcupuncture Effects Blood Pressure

acupuncture and meditationdding daily meditation and checking my vitamins did the trick for me. Really I didn’t think I had stress in my life so maybe it’s just starting my day in a better way that worked. When my blood work [lab tests] came back, it was a simple tune-up of my vitamins and nutrition.

The idea of taking drugs with all their fillers and chemicals was scary to me; it is scary to you?  I mean many prescriptions contain Aluminum[4], and that’s bad for your brain so why risk it?

Yes, it’s exciting acupuncture does lower hypertension. The better news is that most times it’s not a genetic thing and a few easy changes can help you keep your blood pressure in good shape.

Any type of pain is no laughing matter. It can ruin your day even your week. When you are dealing with chronic neck pain, it’s a lifetime struggle to stay fit and enjoy life too. As a health care provider, I see many patients with different types of discomfort. Some of it nearly beyond a person’s ability to cope.chronic neck pain

Neck pain comes with its own unique problems like stiffness, or trouble sleeping. Rarely is this problem a ‘stand alone’ issue. It interferes with many parts of our life and it shouldn’t.

5 Ways Dealing with Chronic Neck Pain Works

  1. Maybe you’ve invested in expensive pillows only to wake with headaches and neck pain. Night’s can be long when you shift all every 30 or 45 minutes trying to find a way your cervical spine feels relaxed. By morning you wake exhausted. I once invested in a $100 pillow just to stop my own neck pain, it didn’t do much. Yet changing your pillow can have significant benefits.

Chronic Neck Pain and Fitness

  1. chronic neck painNot all patients complain about sleep problems along with their discomfort some have problems staying fit with chronic neck pain. I personally have trouble lifting weights; many times neck muscles become stiffer as you try to do a standard workout. So what can you do to sleep better, and do the fitness program you like best?

My discovery and that of the majority of my patients take it slow and go light. Use lighter weight freestyle works best in most cases. For women 3-10 pounds. Men do well up to 35 lbs. If you’re shaking your head why bother, it’s a start. The right moves can make the difference with these lighter routines.

As a Roku user, I have Gaia TV and use the upper body/arms workouts. Stay away from bodybuilding and some movements in Pilates that have you doing the ‘C’ formation which can irritate neck issues. Use a 10 to 20-minute upper body program. If you don’t have Gaia, are in love with your gym membership my health coaching program is designed to help you with these types of problems and more! We have 2 levels of coaching both include video exercises and nutrition as well! You can live anywhere in the world to join my coaching program. To find out more reach us by phone [720-515-4602] or the app ‘voxer’ on your computer or mobile device. Search for: drdebra You can also email us too! moreinfo@debraarko.com neck pain and fitness

The key is to include fitness into your life. Start slowly and get help when and if you need it.

Chronic Neck Pain and Acupuncture or Dry Needling

  1. One of my clients injured years ago when he fell down stairs at work had messed up his knees. Later he realized his neck was hard and stiff too. By then he’d changed careers, but the pain and tightness continued. In Colorado, a qualified acupuncturist or Chinese Medicine professional are fully trained to provide you with acupuncture and dry needling. Insurance covers these in office visits with us too! So what can you expect for results? Most patients even ones with chronic pain in the neck found acupuncture reduced the pain by 70-99%. Many discover they maintain the relief for 4-6 weeks or more and then schedule ‘tune-ups’ like you do with dental cleaning, car oil changes, or getting manicures and pedicures. The best part is health insurance covers acupuncture OR dry needling. Let our office make a quick inquiry for you dry needling uses a specific code.

Acupuncture Injection Therapy With Sarapin

  1. Acupuncture Injection Therapy With SarapinRemember my client with the fall? With acupuncture, we achieved a 60% reduction in pain and an increase in movement of 45%. That’s good since the injury was very old and there is degeneration, but he wanted to try Sarapin acupuncture injections to see how much better his chronic neck pain would improve.

The great news – he is over 90% pain-free! He has about 80% better movement, and his tightness is gone. How long does this last?  He doesn’t want to take any chances of not being able to do things he hasn’t done in years so he has Sarapin acupuncture injections monthly. To learn more about Sarapin read this article post.

How’s Your Micronutrients?

5. As strange as it sounds you are what you eat and sometimes you’re not. Recently a client came in struggling with insomnia and nothing else. She proudly announced that she had no other problems. So we did a micronutrient test and a Methylation test. These two together revealed a large problem with her ability to absorb minerals in her food or orally. These are genetic problems that are treated in our office. It had taken four months before she began to sleep something she had never done more than 45 minutes at a time her entire life.Micronutrients

So what does this have to do with chronic neck pain?  She referred many people some with various types of pain all who had problems with their micronutrients, hormones, or methylation. Sometimes we do acupuncture, add fitness and still don’t fix our discomfort because our body can’t restore balance if our ability to absorb our food is low or our hormones are off.

Personally, I don’t know why you have chronic neck pain my job is to help you find out and get you feeling better. Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t buy into the story that you’re getting old or pain happens with age. This isn’t true! Many of these people are in their 60’s or older. Dealing with chronic neck pain can be difficult some things can improve it and help you.

I’m a firm believer in a good night’s sleep. It can reduce stress and help you enjoy the day. Acupuncture for insomnia is effective for many people. We all have a time in our life that we can’t sleep it might be nothing more than an occasional thing.insomnia

The Many Causes Of Insomnia

  1. What’s on your mind?
If we have a lot on our minds, it can race across the screen in our mental eye. What was it he said to us today? Are you ready for the presentation tomorrow?  Why are you and your spouse fighting so much? All valid questions but not right before bed.

When we let our life go to sleep with us, we have a cruel lover for a night partner. It can wake us hours later or hold us hostage not letting slumber take us.

Acupuncture for insomnia will help so will definite herbal and supplemental mixtures. As a health coach many clients never visit the office, we simply work with a phone consult and natural medicine. If you’re local, add acupuncture to health coaching.

Learning how to stop an overzealous mind is the first order of business. Therapy like dry needling another name for acupuncture assists along the way.

acupuncture or insomnia

Quiet your mind message written over grey background

  1. Did you unwind before bed?

I call it mindfulness or meditation. It’s taking the time to breathe deeply and release the day. Inhale saying something like I am filled with peace and as you exhale say mentally I release this day knowing all is well.  Remember you can’t change the past and the future is yet to be written.

  1. Are you sleeping in front of the TV?

Many clients have a TV in their room or fall asleep on the couch before going to their bedroom. Both are not healthy habits. I could go on about electric emissions affecting your body, but there are countless studies regarding it. EM Watch has interesting information and so does the ever popular WebMD about how TV and other devices into your bedroom.

  1. What did you eat or drink today?

Our stomachs are connected to our head if you doubt it, think how sugar gave you a rush then let you crash during the day. Heavy food takes time to digest, wine converts to sugar hours later for a reverse effect of regular sweeten. Foods that you’re sensitive to yet still eat often have an adverse reaction during the middle of the night. The reaction is insomnia. We don’t think of it as a response, but it is when food disagrees with our own chemistry.overweight

  1. Are you in pain?

Acupuncture for insomnia is the number one relief when the patient has pain. It not only helps you sleep it relieves pain more effectively than any other form of natural medicine. Many pain management patients prefer acupuncture injections for the pain relief. Sarapin is a natural plant that stops pain like cortisone but without the side-effects.

  1. Are you overweight?

Carrying extra pounds around is hard work during the day at night it leads to other problems like bursitis an inflammation of the bursa. Being overweight guarantees inflammation in your joints making you stiff waking you early often. Acupuncture can help with the inflammation and overweight problems.  Being overweight is not the end of your life and if you’ve struggled with weightloss consider our health coaching

  1. Is the other person in bed keeping you up?

Have a partner or spouse in bed, how about a pet? If they can’t sleep, you might be able to either. There are times my husband wakes me and I wake him. If you’re a light sleeper, consider looking into the new mattress that decrease motion.

Acupuncture for Insomnia An Excellent Treatment

When you can’t sleep, it can be acute or chronic. If your insomnia lasts more than 10 days then we couple acupuncture treatment with herbs or proper supplements.

Right now you’re saying Brussels Sprouts Salad really?  What if you can find a way to have this super healthy recipe for this vegetable and love eating it?  Let’s first talk about reasons why you want to think about this recipe and give it a try. Cruciferous vegetables offer better choices for DNA protection and are foods that provide protection again cancer.Brussels Sprouts Salad

Brussels Sprouts Salad And Protection Against Cancer

Brussels sprouts come packed with special cholesterol-lowering benefits when you steam them for cooking. I like cooking them for a better flavor too. This is one food that is a healthy recipe whether it’s cooked or not!

Sprouts have a particular fiber-related component that does a better job of binding together with bile acids in your digestive tract when they’ve been steamed. Their unique binding process makes it easier for bile acids to be expelled, and the outcome is a lowering of your cholesterol levels.

Brussels health benefits in the area of DNA protection in recent research showed they improve the stability of DNA inside of our white blood cells. These blood cells are what protect us from disease even cancer. Certain compounds in Brussels sprouts to block the activity of cancerous enzymes that occur in the body.

Cruciferous vegetables contain high amounts of glucosinolate. This is what gives mustard greens, Brussels sprouts, turnip greens, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, or broccoli their slightly bitter taste it gives you the best protection against cancer.

Let’s talk about your thyroid function. A current study, suggests that eating this vegetable can improve the function of this gland which can affect your energy, weight, and overall emotional health. Some cultures such as Germany eat a more cruciferous vegetable than American diets, and they have lower issues with Thyroid function and cancer.

Still not convinced?  What if I can offer you an Amazing Brussels Sprouts Salad Recipe?

Amazing Brussels Sprouts Salad Recipe

I’m not a fan of Brussels Sprouts Salad so the idea of eating much of them isn’t appealing to me and many others. For me, I wanted a healthy recipe that has anti-cancer benefits. I’ve learned its all in the preparation and dressing!  You can create a salad that others will ask for the recipe. It’s pretty simple, and this recipe is large enough to take to a BBQ or other summer party.healthy recipes

Because Brussels Sprouts Salad is great at other times of the year, keep this recipe handy all year long.

  • 5 cups shaved Brussels sprouts washed and raw. You can do this with a handheld cheese shaver. Or you can steam them for 6-8 minutes to release the flavor and contrast with the apples.
  • 1 apple (thinly sliced) I have tried tart apples and sweet apples depending on the time of the year. My favorite our crisp ones to offset the steamed sprouts.
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans.
  • 3/4 cup pumpkin seeds or pomegranate seeds to add color.
  • Other add in’s can be avocado bites, sliced grapes or try different nuts and seeds to your liking.

Dressing Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup olive oil. Some clients have tried flavor infused olive oil, our favorite is Mango!
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon honey or maple syrup

Directions:

  1. Decide to steam then shred or just shave the sprouts. If cooking place enough water in a pot that your steamer screen sits above the water. Bring to a boil with a lid on the pot. Reduce heat, add fresh sprouts [removed outer layer of loose leave, wash and dry] to pot. Steam for 6-8 minutes. Cool before shredding/shaving by placing in the refrigerator and cut when cold.

In a hurry, skip the steaming and shave the sprouts into a large bowl once cleaned. Add sliced apples, nuts and seeds.

acid reflux

Are Heartburn and Acid Reflux The Same?

Yes, they usually are the same. Symptoms can vary though most patients have a burning sensation along with tightness in the chest. Burping and a bad taste in your mouth also happen. Because IBS or irritable bowel often co-exists with acid reflux, it’s hard to tell which symptoms are heartburn. Bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea are generally part of IBS.

Like our individual whose friend suggests acupuncture relieves heartburn and acid reflux you may have a variety of physical problems listed or others. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can reduce the problem.

Some patients find acupuncture alone solves irritable bowel syndrome while others are more complicated needing herbal medicine as well. Because allergies play a significant role for many, we use a specialized testing when needed to find and then deactivate these food problems.

Acne and Acupuncture

skin conditions

The idea that acupuncture can work for Acne or other skin conditions seems foreign to some people. When you think about it our largest organ is the covering around our body that we call, skin. Through it our body tries sometimes easily and sometimes with great effort to ‘get rid of toxins’ that are on the inside and could do harm to you.

The old saying, “you are what you eat”, it true. Foods high in chemicals or coloring are not digestible. Other toxins our bodies can’t always remove are air-borne chemicals. Allergies also can cause skin conditions. We recommend allergy elimination treatment.  The normal method of elimination is going to the bathroom which isn’t always enough. So to protect your heart, kidneys, and other vital organs we push the poisons out through the skin literally!

In Chinese Medicine and Naturopathic science, we refer to physical conditions as heat toxins and yes acupuncture treats acne and skin conditions. This chapter from my upcoming book focuses on what Chinese medicine and other natural medicine can assist you. Also you’ll find plenty of ideas for home.

Skin Conditions That Acupuncture Treats

skin conditions

Those whiteheads or cysts are full of puss all over your face and back are your body is trying to push out junk. What kind of junk depends on your diet and habits. As kids we’re told its greasy foods but it’s more likely the whole super size quick meal than just the fatty hamburger.

Do you have blackheads or other conditions? Acupuncturists’ call this dampness and acupuncture can help your body balance this so you look young and have great skin.

Acupuncture can help end your nightmare with acne and reduce the redness. Our skin is built from the inside out so working with an acupuncturist that also does facial rejuvenation can be a bonus. We help you rebuild collagen, reduce wrinkles, and give you smooth, shiny skin.

Facial Acupuncture And Herbs

facial acupuncture

How do herbs help you have that shiny glow and pretty skin? In Chinese medicine, herbs play a powerful role internally to help you detox in some cases and in others to decrease heat or dampness created by your environment. Skin conditions often have food sensitivities or allergies associated. These can occur from your digestion or the world around you.

Some patients get rashes, for instance, being outdoors around certain plants while others live near an industrial business. Even past exposure years ago can be the root of skin conditions.

Skin Rashes and Other Skin Conditions

Personally I experienced a severe skin rash. It had to do with a preservative in a particular food. It took three years to narrow it down. The simple cure for me was to avoid this food preservative. Yet before my skin would clear up I used herbs for dampness and heat along with acupuncture.

For Your Medical Doctor:
There are four areas of dermatology where Chinese medicine is useful for your patients. Chang Yang (skin sores), Pi Fu Ling (skin disorders, such as eruptions), Gan Men Bing (rectal or anus disorders, such as hemorrhoids), and Za Bing (digestive disorders).

facial acupuncture

If you’re working with a physician, acupuncture assists with inflammation in the body, balancing the digestive system and supports your western care.

A few herbal formulas we use to further encourage for healthy skin have excellent results without chemicals that may further irritate the tissues. These formulas treat acne, eczema, dermatitis, rashes, and psoriasis. Many formulas have been in use for many centuries.
The four herbs — Rhubarb (Dai Huang), Sophora (Ku Shen), Phellodendron (Huang Bai) and Skullcap (Huang Qin) — were placed under scientific study and were found to have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral qualities. Clinical research indicated that Phellodendron (Huang Bai) is excellent in treating eczema.

Nutrients – Homeopathy – Herbs

When it comes to what is on the inside, your best food defenses are antioxidants for healthy skin. I know you’ve heard that vitamin C and E work well but why and what foods.

These two vitamins and your primary minerals increase collagen in the skin. This is the stuff that makes your skin wrinkle free and smooth.homeopathy

Chinese medicine has terrific formulas that clear up skin fast and reduce flare-ups as previously mentioned. All these are available to both acupuncture patients and our online clients!

My “Fave” Foods

Guava, strawberries, pineapple, papaya, and lemons. Eat more broccoli, kale and mangos too. Going for the white potatoes keep the skin on!

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”  ~Hippocrates

Melaleuca, Alternifolia, Chamomile, and Lavender can all work for skin conditions. Of course we have these and more available for you through office. You don’t have to have acupuncture treatment to be a client. Our clients live throughout the USA and work with us by phone!

Mindset

Stress plays a big part in skin health. Each morning says to yourself, ‘I have a stress free day ahead and meet it with a radiant smile. ‘

“Health is not simply the absence of sickness.”  ~Hannah Green

What’s Better for Fitness Performance: Carbs or Fat

Today we know a lot more about what to eat and why. So what’s better for fitness performance: carbs or fat? We’ve all heard the saying eat carbs before doing a physical activity and if you’re a mom, the saying went that you fed your child a large meal of pasta before a soccer game.

Nutrition is a significant element for anyone especially those who exercise or consider themselves athletes. Food is the fuel for your endurance and high-intensity. For this reason, carbohydrates have been the food source of choice.

In looking at Fitness performance is it really the best resource for you?

What’s Better for Fitness Performance: Carbs or Fat?

How Carbohydrates and Fat Compare During Exercise:

Our body can store both fat and carbs. Why we have always been told to eat a large bowl of pasta before running a race, or playing a hockey game is that carbohydrates convert to energy faster. Carbs also are the most efficient form for the experienced athlete.

What about fat then?  Fat burns slower. This means it increases endurance and as your workout longer, or run farther having fat before you begin can increase your ability to sustain your running, cycling, or triathlon.

Our body’s store fat limitlessly. This is why we gain weight so eating fat or having a bit of body fat can be a good thing! The available carbohydrate stores are limited to what you’ve just eaten, not eliminated, or converted to fat storage.

There is no straight answer to what’s better for fitness performance: carbs or fat it depends on what you’re doing!

Weight gain and Carbohydrates

weight gain and carbohydrates

Another topic around food and fitness is weight gain and carbohydrates.

If you don’t use up all the calories from carbohydrates, you’ll store these as fat adding pounds and body mass in fat grams to yourself. There is a direct tie between weight gain and carbohydrates.

The key is eating a balance. In 2004, the Australian Institute of Sport found that your body can use a high-fat, low-carb diet by burning more fat during exercise.

Other research those still points out that performance is lost when you add too much fat.

Bottom line balance in all your meals means better performance. Eat the right diet for you to be at a healthy weight. The issue of weight gain and carbohydrates come in when you eat too much of this food group.

Before you move into a high-intensity workout or cardio activity, eat a tiny amount of carbs. Running for the large slice of lasagna or eating a heaping pile of mashed potatoes means weight gain in many instances.

Instead, eat a headful of nuts or sample a few small bites of pasta 30 minutes before activity for the average person. What’s better for fitness performance: carbs or fat is individual to each one. It also depends on what you’re doing as an activity the intensity or the endurance. Finally, consider weight gain and carbohydrates. If you’re looking to lose weight limit high carbs in your diet until you reach your goal weight.

Variation For Chicken Tarragon Recipe

Chicken Taffagon

There are many ways to prepare a Creamy Chicken Marsala. Because the original calls for heavy cream, this is a lighter version. A variation of this dish is named Creamy Chicken Tarragon.

Just use a white wine and add to the recipe ½ to 1 TBP of crushed Tarragon. If you want to make Chicken Tarragon a much lighter version remove the half and half and increase the broth a ¼ cup. The sauce will be thin and can be thickened. Add ¼ tsp of arrowroot mixed with the cold wine or broth.
