Changing The Game And The War On Fat

In part 1, Ending The War On Fat, we focused more on the story most Americans and their doctors bought into about diet. Talking about fat isn’t a fun topic. If I said, the word, ‘food’ more people would jump to read these articles. However, more than a 1/3 of America is obese, not just overweight.

war on fatThese articles are for everyone who eats that includes you! They help you take a fresh look at your ability to live longer and healthier if you chose. You’ll be able to stop eating low fat diets and enjoy food the way your grandparents did.

In part two, we’re going to talk more about what happened when people started going low fat and eating low cholesterol foods. Why are we one of the sickest and fattest people living on planet earth?

Part 3 is what you can do to feel better, live longer, and be healthier. Before we dive in, is modern medicine talking about this issue? What are the results of this big experiment on human beings?

Low Fat Diet Doesn’t Stop Obesity

The director of New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center, housed at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. David Ludwig stated, “There’s an overwhelmingly strong case to be made for the opposite,” when asked if cutting back on fat to lose weight or prevent heart disease is a good idea.

With obesity up there’s a new war, a war on fat people. Only a few centers’ like New Balance are looking at the cause and changing people’s diets.

LDL and Low Cholesterol Foods

Eating low cholesterol foods robs your brain of LDL that’s called ‘bad cholesterol’. Guess what your brain needs to thrive and think. LDL cholesterol it turns out isn’t bad at all! According to Dr David Perlmutter, in his book, Grain Brain, “LDL isn’t a cholesterol molecule at all, good or bad. It’s a low-density lipoprotein. The purpose of LDL in our brain is to capture life-giving cholesterol and transport it to neurons, where it performs critically important functions. “LDL is only ‘bad’ for you when it becomes oxidized. One of the most common ways to do this is to add glucose sugars [corn syrup, table sugar, etc.] into the diet.

Most grocers offer a Low Cholesterol Foods List. Look at the back of these packages at the grams of sugar and type. You will be surprised.

Why Your Doctor Loves The Low Fat Diet

low cholestrol foods

Even with all the evidence against low fat diets, many doctors are slow to change. My experience in speaking with three area specialists’ is keep eating a low fat diet to be healthy. When I pointed out the volumes of research from their community on the topic, their own colleagues were called quacks. For me, my own remarkable health is evidence.

Besides weight loss, is big business. Farming incentives for grain crops to produce vast quantities of corn for sweetener makes it hard for many to grow other crops. Corn syrup, the worst form of sugar is in nearly every food on your local store shelf.

It makes the instant meal taste better. It replaces the rich flavor our bodies’ crave from fats with a sweet tooth that is hard to please.

Health benefits of butter were buried. The public is asking is butter healthy?  According to the British Medical Journal saturated fat, is not the issue when it comes to heart disease.

What Your Brain Eats – End The War On Fat

Reason one, is our body is craving fats because our brain needs it to think and our body needs it to use energy. Second, corn syrup and artificial sweeteners are addictive.

The war on fat changed our culture and business. To change how America eats means to change industry one mouth at a time.

low fat diet

The problem is the research is mounting and our economy or medical professionals don’t really know how to ease into this new paradigm.

There are changes happening though. We know fats in vegetables and fish are good for us. Salmon for instance is known as the heart protector in alternative medicine circles. Coconut oil once a bad fat has whole books dedicated to how to use it.

New York University’s professor of nutrition and public health, Marion Nestle says, “The thinking went that if people reduced saturated fat they would replace it with healthy fruits and vegetables.” He goes on to point out, “Well that was naïve.”

What does this new research say and should we be quick to listen once again?

On the later, the evidence isn’t new. There are thirty-five year studies with whole towns researched over three generations. Studies that are more recent involve large numbers of people with various genetics for as long as a decade. Even with all the evidence the war on fat continues.

A good book to buy is, Brain Grain by David Perlmutter, MD. Once you finish reading part 3 of this series, grab a copy for more evidence and tools to help you make the dietary changes.

Part 3 of ending the war on fat will go into some ways to get started eating for wellness.

Scoliosis Pain And Acupuncture Scoliosis

I know that a chiropractor once tried to tell me I had scoliosis. It was a few years ago and I found it odd since I have used acupuncture treatment for scoliosis back pain with many patients and knew I didn’t have it. Occasionally a client shares someone told them they’re back pain is caused by a curved spine. Their spine seemed fine. The truth be told we all have a slight bend in our spine.

Curvature Of The Spine

There are many names for Scoliosis another being curvature of the spine. In most people it is not a problem. For some though it can mean death or end their ability to walk. Usually it starts in childhood. Some adults develop Scoliosis due to sports or their career too.

That’s the problem; it doesn’t always start in childhood, and we all have curve to our spine especially by the time you hit your 40’s. It’s usually due to bending or being active. This is my case normal wear n’ tear. Not everyone is so lucky scoliosis is a serious problem. It often evolves surgeries to fix the problem.

In all this time, 22 years I have been honored to help some of the nicest people with back pain of curvature of the spine and yes true scoliosis cases. I am blessed to have this wonderful patient who wanted to share her remarkable story of growing up a child with scoliosis and surgeries to stand strong and tall.curvature of the spine

Can You Still Enjoy Normal Things If You Have Scoliosis?

Scoliosis doesn’t have to slow you down. It doesn’t have to end your ability to enjoy things like walking, hiking, or riding a bicycle.  With natural medicine like acupuncture you can reduce pain and increase flexibility. Even general back pain from muscle tightness or disc problems benefit from acupuncture.
I look forward to hearing from you and finding out more about your story and how acupuncture can help your curvature of the spine or other back pain.

The War On Fat A Big Fat Lie Revealed

Recently new reports have talked about ending the war on fat. Most people are aware there has been a battle in the diet world regarding what foods make you gain weight. A little known event occurred back in the 1970’s that changed the way America ate. It caused us to be the heaviest culture on the planet.

Fat The Most Vilified Nutrient The In American Diet

Science suggests we’ve been wrong about what to eat for forty years. My acupuncture patients have heard me talk about this problem for a decade!

end war on fat

I was in college in the 1970’s and skinny as a rail yet everywhere I turned the media or packaging recommended get rid of my favorite’s whole milk, tasty butter, and slow-cooked oatmeal. Even my blue cheese dressing made from real buttermilk was too high in fat. Personally, I didn’t think anything of the recommendations at the time.

Like most Denver college kids in 1977, I ate what I could afford. That was the year George McGovern a politician published a landmark finding by the senate committee known as ‘Dietary Goals For The Unites States’. It urges Americans to eat less high fat red meat, eggs, and dairy.

To End the War on Fat- We Must Change How We Eat

Instead, we were to replace it with fruits, vegetables, and especially refined carbohydrates. The carbs were easy for most Americans. By 1980, store shelves overloaded with boxed pasta, instant cereals, and easy made dinners became popular. This same year, the US Department of Agriculture [USDA] was in full gear and issued the first dietary guidelines.

I was working in health care and not long after we started our family. As a good mother, I tried to carbo load my son before his soccer games, and made sure they had skim milk to drink over their high-sugar instant cereals. Eggs were used for baking not breakfast and our kitchen counter had an assembly line of pasta maker, bread maker, and rice cooker next to the extra-wide toaster.

Lawmakers and physicians it is said felt they had to make changes to our diet because we had the highest death rate from heart attacks. Therefore, ‘attack’ the diet based on a poorly done study was the outcome. Now it’s time to end the on fat.

One leading nutritionist, the president of the National Academy of Sciences put it this way, “we are embarking on a vast nutritional experiment.”

The American Fat-free Diet Failure May Be Leading To Diabetes

diabetes

Experiment we did and today the whole thing is a failure. Americans are sicker than ever with over 90% of my patients coming in with chronic pain and inflammation. Type 2 diabetes has increased by 166% since the beginning of 1980 to the beginning of this decade.

I feel lucky nearly 1 in 10 adults have the disease. My family escaped becoming part of this startling statistic simply by adopting a different diet in the 1990’s. It didn’t make us popular with friends or relatives and some of the cruelest comments have been thrown our way.

One look in the mirror and I knew I was right as others gained weight and we stayed or even reduced our weight easily with a little added exercise. Another factor for us was how we felt.

Nutrition: You Are What You Eat

One of the first things my husband said to me was, “my knees don’t hurt anymore.” I look much younger than others do my age. There’s the fact that both of us don’t need western medicines and have no illnesses.

All we did at first was eat less. Then we changed to 2% milk and refused to eat things labeled ‘low-fat’. Around 2000 we got rid of the all the machines, they were only collecting dust. We kept the toaster, since we still bought bread.

I didn’t know the estimates swirling around the rise of diabetes although in my acupuncture practice with each lab test patients were showing ever-increasing glucose levels. Many refused to listen to my suspicions and others were happy to know they weren’t alone in their misgivings about our diet. British Medical Journal Saturated Fat studies confirm the western diet is not improving health rather making us sick.

nutritionHeart disease is down not because of diet but better medical care in emergency rooms as we understand the cardiovascular system and have better equipment. People are smoking less and taking statins to lower cholesterol although they are leaving men impotent and users with memory loss. The high risk of side effects from Statins and the evidence they don’t do that much is scary in my opinion.

The health failure to baby boomers and Gen X’ers is an estimated 86 million people are pre-diabetic and the cost for treatment is burdening our system at $245 million each year.

I know this sounds dismal it’s not. Some people even suggest their is a war on fat people, that’s not true. In part, 2 and 3 we will cover more about why to end your personal war on fat and how you can turn your health around regardless of illness or age. While nothing can reclaim lost health, you drive the bus and get to choose where you go from here on out.

If you have food allergies substitutions are provided if possible.

Great ComboTomato-Basil Salad and Parmesan Chickenchicken recipe

1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts (2 breasts)

1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour ** or gluten substitute. my favorites are potatoes or coconut.

2 egg whites, beaten

6 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese or a goat cheese if you desire dairy free

1 tsp fines herbs, dried (mixture of dried

chives, parsley, basil, and tarragon)

3 plum (Roma) tomatoes, seeded and

chopped. If you have inflammation use grapes instead since tomatoes can increase joint inflammation.

2 tsp shredded fresh basil leaves

1 lemon, juiced

Dash of black pepper

2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

4 cups mixed baby salad greens (mesclun mix)

Directions

1. Trim any visible fat from the chicken breasts and slice them into four 4-ounce servings. Place the chicken between two sheets of waxpaper or plastic wrap. Pound with the bottom of a pan or rolling pin until the meat is 1⁄4- to1⁄2-inch thick.

2. Prepare three pie plates or flat-bottomed bowls and place the flour, egg whites, and Parmesan in each respectively. Toss the dried herbs in with the cheese. Working with one piece of chicken at a time, dip the meat into the flour, then the egg white, and finally the cheese.

Shake off any excess egg white before coating with the cheese. It is best to use one hand for the dry coatings and one for the wet to avoid clumping the batter.

3. Spray a nonstick skillet with nonstick cooking spray and place over moderate heat. Sauté the chicken until cooked through, 5 to 6 minutes per side.

4. While the chicken is cooking, combine the tomato and basil in a small bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the lemon juice and pepper. Slowly whisk in the oil, then pour the mixture over the tomatoes.

5. To serve, toss the greens with the tomato  and dressing and divide among four plates. Top with the chicken.

It’s really simple and easy to make. You can serve this to a crowd or for lunch.

Readers and patients alike often ask which supplements for fitness training are best. The truth is none. The answer is a healthy diet along with proper exercise.Vitamins don’t make your workout better, though some may add to your endurance. The most difficult part of busy professionals in finding the time to exercise on a regular basis.

Exercise

When we speak of diet, I don’t mean limiting your food intake, I am talking about eating for a healthier you. Gaiam Life had a great article on not eating enough during the day, a common problem that stops weight loss. For most professionals, the gym bag or walking shoes sit beside your desk, ready to go but you don’t move come lunch time. That report needs to be done, or the idea of coming back to work after sweating, makes it easy to talk ourselves out of lunchtime workouts. So you decide to eat less and the cycle stalls your metabolism.

Sports Experts Weigh In About Supplements For Training

Gary Stuart, a professional trainer, writes for the Washington Post and has this to say. “My general opinion is that supplements are unnecessary.”

weoght loss

Gary says, “If you’re doing a long workout and want protein, the best shake protein appears to be whey.” This is because it is assimilated 70% quicker than soy or casein. This means it goes to your muscles faster.

“As for the belief that you must eat or have protein within 30 minutes of a workout, there is no proof or evidence this is important,” he continues on to say.

Another favorite vitamin or mineral by gym goers or those exercising is Creatine. There is a large body of evidence supporting it adds muscle mass. It’s important to note it also causes water storage. Not so great if you want to look slim, reduce joint pain or losing weight. It is great news if you’re a bodybuilder looking to put on weight. For the person who sits at a desk all day, this only adds to your feeling of heaviness in the afternoons.

supplements

Can Supplements For Training Do More Harm Than Good?

This is something to note about joint pain for everyone. Our bodies store water in muscle, fat, and joint tissue. Water storage is never good for your health.

So how do caffeine or energy drinks help with training or workouts? They can give you the ability to exercise longer. I am not a fan of using caffeine to get the job done, and that includes your real job. My favorite natural botanical is Prodovite because it works so well and doesn’t have any added sugar, preservatives, or chemicals. This is a video of how quickly it changes your blood. Recently it was WADA Tested and accepted for use by athletic competitors needing Endurance Training Supplements. More information can be found on the product site.

How Much Exercise Or Training Is Best?

weight lossThis can be 15-45 minutes daily. It should be a mix of walking, jogging or cycling. Include weight lifting 1-3 times weekly. This can add your own body weight through yoga or similar exercising. Some time ago we had an article with a cool fat blaster infographic to do. Weight loss is easy, if you do this list along with a proper eating plan.

If you include natural or organic vegetables daily in your diet with high-quality protein, you can keep vitamins to a minimum. You do not need supplements to build muscle or losing pounds. They simply ‘supplement’ a diet poor in nutritional value.

The bottom line, the best weight training supplements are what comes naturally in food. Take the money and spend it on higher quality food instead of supplements for training.

Can one tiny habit at a time make you healthy? I believe this is possible and easy. I am not the only person who feels this way. BJ Fogg did a fantastic video for TED Talks.

tiny habitIn this video, you will learn how to take one small step at a time to reach your maximum potential. This isn’t just about health, you can apply the knowledge to relationships, physical activity, and your spiritual path.

My favorite story in this video has to do with flossing only one tooth. Watch the funny reaction of the audience to this event. BJ Fogg keen interest in behavior is apparent as he takes us on an enlightening journey into who we are and how easy re-inventing yourself can be.

What Tiny Habit Are You Ready To Change?

Using one tiny habit at a time, you can make it easy to crowd out things you want to change. One habit I changed was my desire to stop eating bread at every meal. Instead of trying to stop altogether at first, I only chose to eat it less often and ate more healthy foods as a replacement.

Lunch was when I removed bread. I eat my chicken salad on a bed of lettuce instead, and I increased the amount of other vegetables like celery one of my favorites.

Mindset

I am careful with fruit because of the high sugar content. I drink tea so I added a banana on the side. It sounds odd, but Ginger Pineapple tea and fruit is fantastic as a mid-afternoon snack.

Another tiny habit I started; eating more often and smaller meals. People in Europe have done this for centuries and they don’t struggle with weight as much as Americans.

Are you ready for TEDTV? Watch the video and then continue reading some ideas you can use to create wellness.

Wellness A Path To Longer Life

I hope you enjoyed the video and you’re thinking of one tiny habit you would like to ‘add’ to your life. Maybe it’s about food. It can be eating one more serving of vegetables daily. Perhaps it’s about relationships. Just saying I love you to a dear one once a day could be your goal. It could be smiling at a stranger once a day.

Healthy Life purchased Fotolia copyrighted. The Smile – A Tiny Habit

I had a patient who did this. She came in complaining about other people. My suggestion was to find one person that frustrated them each day [she was easily irritated] and to take a deep breath and then smile.

“Kary” was motivated. Her employer had noted a few complaints. After one week, she returned. At first she was quite, looking down at your folded hands. Then she told me how angry she was at herself. You see, she was irritated with herself. Sometimes others are a mirror for us.

Now Kary had started smiling at people and breathing when they did something that bothered her. She was troubled by things people did; she secretly didn’t like these traits about herself. Kary decided to start coaching along with her acupuncture visits. Together we were able to use emotional acupuncture therapy to help her relax, and sleep better. Health coaching had a significant impact for Kary; she was able to use the mindset skills to enhance her happiness!

 Tiny Habits For Mindset

Mindset

You can do this with your mindset too. Start with your attitude for instance. So what if you told yourself you were awesome once a day? This simple statement can take life inside you and help you have more happiness. How about the one tiny habit of walking every day and agreeing to feel more energy daily can it actually work? You’ll have to try to find out but first watch this fun and provocative video first!

Make each day be a tiny step toward a healthier you. It’s not a big change that wins the day it’s those tiny habits that help us be happy and have more energy. Whether your health is excellent or you’re feeling at a loss for how to start making changes happen. Have fun doing it and know we here at Accent On Health, care about you!
