My mother used to say, “Herbal Medicine is as old as the hills!” What she was talking about is the fact that every culture had plant-based remedies.
Most people, who know me, think I am only referring to Chinese Medicine herbal practices. I use a number of plant-based theories. They include Ayurvedic, Native American, and Asian herbs.
Most spices and many plants we eat or cook with also have healing energies.
Herbal Medicine Vs Foods
Everything in nature has energy. It’s that static that gets you when you walk on the carpet. Some of my clients work at Public Utilities in their area and speak of the earth’s electro-magnetic field. Plants have it too.
Onions, for instance, are great for boosting the immune system and adding flavor to foods. They are sweet and spicy in taste. What you add to food and what we use in medicine are different.
It is how they are cultivated not the type of onion. Both can be green onions for instance. The medicinal harvest will be less in savory flavors and contain more naturally occurring chemicals from the earth, [minerals, antioxidants, micronutrients] that ‘cool’ a sore throat or help stop cough. The long green stemmed varieties you and I place on the table for eating or add to our favorite dishes bring aroma and some sweetness.
The food variety contains the same minerals, antioxidants, and micronutrients just less.
Herbal Medicine A Concentrated Food
“People are fed by the Food Industry which pays no attention to health, and are treated by the Health Industry which pays no attentions to food.” Wendell Berry
I love helping people there’s no doubt about it. Using food as medicine is my favorite way to do this, but sometimes we need a little help. This is where things like herbal medicine comes in because if they are from a high-quality source they enhance what you’re eating.
Herbs become vital if you don’t eat organic, clean foods. If you eat out often or at fast-food adding herbal formulas to your day can bring nature back into your diet and health. With my health coaching we work with herbs as food, in easy fun recipes you and your family will love to eat.
Over-the-counter herbals often are of inferior quality but can help a little. I always recommend professional grade that are third-party tested for quality. You need less when you get quality. This saves money.
Of course, the best way to save money and feel great is to eat food rich in the things your body and mind need.
Why use Herbal Medicine?
Herbal Medicine fills in the gap in the western diet for one. As an acupuncturist and a health coach, I have the opportunity to look for solutions that work for you. Using herbs may be an excellent way to strengthen your health.
Herbs also are super if you have acute problems with indigestion, a cold, or can’t sleep for instance. I believe that nature gave us all the medicine we need. Western medicine provides us ways to treat the life-threatening emergency problems.
In my practice, I work with you where you’re at that may include things like herbal medicine, essential oils and more. Contact our office for more information.
